Video Transcript from Mike Blackwell
Mike: It’s good to be here with you. I love Branson. This is our thirteenth year in Branson. We’ve been coming to Branson with a group from twelve hundred to twenty three hundred for the last twelve years we’ve been here. We come back every year. This is one of fifty two sites we have around the world that are all going on at the same time. We choose Branson because it’s very family friendly. I like the value system here in Branson. For our people they’ve got a good variety of things to do. Beautiful area of the country to be in. Also the fact that our people can do a lot of things and do it reasonably economically. People are afraid of what about prices. I’ve been doing this for thirty years and Branson’s one of the best most economical places we’ve ever been. Plus a lot of variety and a lot of beautiful scenery. As far as I’m concerned, we have no desire to go anywhere else. We’ve had other people try to get us to move elsewhere and as far as I’m concerned for this part of the country we will stay in Branson, because again it’s the friendliness of the people. People will wave at you and they are actually really friendly.
TCR 00:02:13.06
In fact I was just talking to a family that came over here from England, just outside the building here just before I came in. They are here with us because they were here one time before and enjoyed us so much that they’re coming back.
TCR 00:02:21.28
Branson has a lot to offer to offer families. It’s family friendly. If you got women who enjoy shopping, it’s a mecca for that. People who just enjoy sitting back and enjoying the beauty. It’s a beautiful time of the year down here in the fall. Although, Branson’s a nice place any time of the year. The winter’s are mild. Branson’s just an excellent spot. Like I said, I have no desire to go anywhere else. Our people love it. We have people come here from all over the country. It’s basically a regional site. We have people coming here from all over the country, in fact probably our largest group comes from Texas up here. A lot of other groups come from all over the country. We really enjoy it. Branson just has a little bit of everything.
TCR 00:03:15.23
Safety? I’ve never had a problem with anything getting stolen in Branson in thirteen years. That’s not to say that there aren’t people around who will do it. There are everywhere in the country. I’ve never had anything stolen in Branson in thirteen years. Safety - people feel totally safe. As far as the facilities, in case somebody has an accident, they have an excellent hospital, and an excellent EMT service here. We’ve had to use the EMTs two or three times. We’ve had people in the local hospital that come and get sick while they are here, not because of being here; because of diseases and problems they had before they got here. Very safe, very family oriented in every way that I can see.
TCR 00:04:00.03
Ah well, we have a lot of people who enjoy fishing. There are three lakes close by for fishing. Anything from trout fishing, the world championship brown trout came out of a lake just about a mile from where we are here. There are hiking trails for those who like that. For those who prefer there are probably ten or twelve miniature golf courses, five or six go cart tracks around within the immediate area, plus shopping and a whole lot of shows and a whole of theaters around here. All family shows, family oriented shows. I have yet to see in all the theaters we have here in Branson. I have yet to see one show that I wouldn’t recommend our church members go to as church people.
TCR 00:04:50.25
Well as I said, our group is basically a cross section of a normal church. We have elderly people who love to come to Branson, because being able to be close and everything being close together. Here where we are right now at the Baldknobbers Theater we have two hundred rooms booked on just either side of it and across the street. A lot of our people stay there. There are some people who don’t want to get in and drive. But as far as family ties, you can go anywhere and do things as a family. You’ve got family activities. You can take the family for just a stroll in the woods. You can go out to a lot of the trails around here. There’s family activities. Plenty to do whether you are talking about teenagers or senior citizens or singles or everywhere in between. We have a sizeable group of young singles who come here because there are a lot of things they can do together even as a group.
TCR 00:06:00.1
Well I think probably to me one of the outstanding things that makes me want to come back to Branson here is just the friendliness and helpfulness of virtually everybody. With the size of group we have we use everything from small Mom and Pop motels all the way up to some of the higher established hotels. We use a lot of condos. We go to a lot of things. Virtually everybody from the stores, the restaurants, and the facilities that we use are all just very, very friendly. Because of the way we do it the theater here gives us a wonderful venue for our main meetings. We have a lot of other smaller meetings that are scattered various places within about a half a mile of here ranging from twenty five to thirty all the way up to about five hundred. There are facilities that can handle that. Everybody is just very, very helpful. To me the friendliness and helpfulness of the people in the area is probably one of the biggest selling points.
TCR 00:07:03.29
Absolutely, again I’ve done this many years in various parts of the country and Branson as far as overall economy is probably the most economical area I’ve ever been to. Now, I’ve talked to people at conventions and that type of thing for meeting planners and they say, “Oh Branson I don’t know if we can afford to go there.” And I just say if you can afford to go anywhere in the country you can probably afford to go to Branson. Because whether you are on a high end budget, they have some beautiful high end hotels or if you’re on an extremely tight budget there are a lot of facilities around here. Branson is a town of about six thousand and I think at last count it had something around nineteen thousand hotel rooms. Plus about another seven or eight thousand condo rooms.
TCR 00:07:55.14
Well I’ll tell you what. Branson’s one of two areas I’ve worked in where I could go to work for the CVB and be very happy and not have to exaggerate on anything. The other one is Rapid City South Dakota. But again just because of the laid back nature of the people and again one of the things I like about Branson that frankly some people might find as a bit of a challenge is you deal one on one with a lot of the various people here and establishments and you develop a relationship. The relationship you have then lasts forever. We have people and I may be off track now, but we have people here at the Baldknobbers now who I’ll come in and start planning our convention and they’ll say whatever happened to this couple and that couple or this little family that used to sit over here. Because again you get acquainted and it’s like a family.
TCR 00:08:52.27
Well I think if you can set it up and get a chance to have something here just one time, you will be back. And all I can say is, “Hey I’d love to encourage them all to come anytime except for anytime we’re here.” Other than that, it’s got something for everybody, whether it’s a group strictly of adults or families or young people. Bring your church youth groups here. There’s a lot of things to do for them. For conventions or larger groups it just works out very, very well. It’s just really a wonderful area.
TCR 00:09:32.10
That’s interesting because especially this year with the tight finances and all a lot of people are experiencing, people are not doing as much traveling. But we’re finding here and I’m sure that part of that is because of the economy of the area and part of it’s because of our membership base, we’ve got our third largest group we’ve ever had. In fact we’re bursting at the seams this year. The attendance just seems to keep going up. Branson becomes more and more popular. We have fifty two sites and Branson’s our second most popular site anywhere. The site that’s more popular there’s not a whole lot we can do about it. It’s Panama City Beach where they have the gulf coast beach. I tell them we’ve got a beach here in Branson but it doesn’t compare to what they have down there.
TCR 00:10:40.07
Everyday while we’re here, this is of course a church convention, which means it’s based around church and church meetings and church services. Everyday we’re here, on the first day and last day, we have church in the morning and the afternoon with a break in between. All the other days we have church every morning from ten until noon. Then in the afternoons we will sometimes have other things going on. Sometimes just free time for the families to just get together and go enjoy the various facilities around here. They’ll enjoy the various things around Branson. On each morning our church services run about two hours in length or a little shorter than that. We have pretty much your normal church. We have congregational hymns, then we have a short inspirational message. Then we have some music, some special music, the choir or the soloist. Then we have a longer message. Again there’ll designed around a basic theme. Our convention as you’ll see is called, “The Feast of Tabernacles.” It’s based around the Biblical celebration that both was kept in the Old Testament and was also kept by Jesus and his disciples in the New Testament. It pictures a time when Jesus Christ is going to be coming back here to earth to rule. Of course most of our services revolve around that theme to a certain extent.
TCR 00:13:08.03
Why do we come to Branson to begin with? We try to have a convention facility or location in various parts of the country to balance out for our people to not to have to drive as far. I live in Missouri. I live in Springfield. I went to our convention and had to drive all the way to Florida for our convention and I started Branson, Missouri. We need to have a convention in Branson. We need to have a convention somewhere in the Midwest and Branson, Missouri is a beautiful location to do it. So basically I was given the opportunity to say, “Ok see what you can find down there, and see if you can find anything in Branson that will work.” Well, at the time Branson did not have a convention center. They have a beautiful convention center now. Did not have a convention center at that point and time. And basically what was available were performing arts theaters. Absolutely spectacular performing arts theaters all over, but performing arts theaters. So we went in the first year and negotiated with one of the theaters here in town that out on the north edge of town and were able to work out the meeting space in conjunction with their show. And it worked out very well. The first year when these people found out we were coming to Branson, the theater we had at that point and time seated twenty two hundred and I have thirty five hundred people want to come to Branson. I said if you can figure out how to put thirty five hundred people into twenty two hundred seats without getting too personal, I’ll be happy to do it. But we weren’t so we had twenty two hundred and it’s just gone from there. And it’s been very popular invariably every year. It’s either the second or third most popular only about twice has it been third most popular otherwise it’s always our second most popular site. |

Video Transcript from Phil Waldrep
Phil: We chose Branson for the first time over ten years ago, because we wanted to go to
a place where we knew our attendees would be safe, it would be enjoyable, it would be a place were the restaurants and hotels would be affordable. Not only that… we wanted to go to a place where the city said, “You’re welcome here!” We found when we came to Branson, that the city, from the people on the street to the Tourism Department, to the hotels and the restaurants all were glad we were here. They made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. That’s why we come back every year. Not just one conference, we bring two conferences: one in the Spring and one in the Fall.
TCR 00:37:35.20
Branson is a good fit because of it’s location, it’s accessible to many people, especially in the Mid-West, it is also very close to airports so people can fly into Springfield and now Branson is getting their own new wonderful airport from what I understand, so there will be more air service so people can come. It’s also a good fit because there’s a lot to do. Our conferences are designed so people have a lot of free time. They can go to a show, go shopping, with some of the best outlet shopping. And now the Branson Landing is a wonderful new facility with classy stores, plenty of restaurants. If you want to go with the traditional restaurants well they’re here. If you want to do something that’s a little more of the Ozark flavor, it’s here to do as well. So people like to have those opportunities and variety. They never get bored and they come back year after year. Some of them have told us, “I’ve never done the same thing twice when I went to Branson.”
TCR 00:38:53.17
When we first did our Women of Joy Conference, we projected we may have oh three hundred people, and the first year we had a little over four hundred. Well let me tell you how that conference alone has grown in five years. The first year again we projected three fifty and had like four twenty five. We were pleased with that. This past year at our Women of Joy Conference we sold out at thirty five hundred and we turned away over two thousand that could not get in because it was not facility large enough at that time to accommodate. At the end of that conference we gave people the opportunity to register for next year’s conference. Within twenty four hours our conference was completely sold out. So now when people ask me, “Does Branson work?” I say “Hey we had three fifty the first year and now I have thirty five hundred and I turned away two thousand attendees. I mean I know our program is good, but it’s not that good when compared to a place you can have it. Branson’s a great place for that.
TCR 00:41:15.08
When I think of conferences in Branson, and I think about the connection people make, one of the things that has been easy for me as a meeting planner is when I invite people to come be a part of our program. Many times the people we invite are well known personalities and they’ve been everywhere, they’ve done it all. We found when we invite them and say “Why don’t you come to Branson?” Well they return our phone calls and they want to come. I’ll give you a great example of that. George Beverly Shea has been the soloist for the Billy Graham Crusades for many, many years. And even though he is now well into his nineties, when we called him four years ago and said would you come do a concert for us in Branson Missouri? Well first of all he does very, very few concerts. No more than two or three a year. And we really didn’t know him well enough to say, “Well, he’ll do it for us.” And when he called me back he said, “Branson. I’ve always wanted to go to Branson.” And he began to tell me about all the fishing, and all these things he wanted to do, and because we were in Branson, George Beverly Shea, who has sung to more people than any other person in history, came to our conference. And only because we were in Branson.
TCR 00:42:42.18
When people ask me if Branson is a family friendly city, my answer is yes, yes, yes. And think about what you look for with family. First of all it’s extremely safe down here. I’ve never felt in any way unsafe. I’ve never thought for a moment of not bringing my children here and allowing them to go shopping even on their own, because it’s very, very safe. But in addition to that there are things to do here for the family. The shows here are family oriented. You can carry your kids to virtually any show in this town and they are going to walk out of there thinking it’s great and you’re not going to be embarrassed at all. In addition to that, there is a lot of activity for them. You’ve got amusement parks, like Silver Dollar City, you’ve got shopping and believe me I’ve got two daughters and they love shopping. And all of that with the water parks, all the things that are available here, makes it attractive to families. So what I found was, it’s not only those who are attending our conference who want to come but they tend to bring along their families, and their kids in particular, because you know they just like that atmosphere that you find here in Branson, Missouri.
TCR 00:44:39.20
When I think of Branson as a location, there are some things you can find in other cities, such as affordable hotels, very nice hotels and good restaurants. But I don’t know if you can duplicate the beauty of the mountains. Particularly in the fall when we bring our Celebrators, our senior adult conference to this area. I don’t know if we can duplicate the foliage that you have in Branson and the beauty just driving down and seeing the river and the lakes. It’s just an experience that you just can’t duplicate. You can’t take that and just package that carry it around with you. And so when people come to Branson, they’re a little bit surprised because they not only see all of the beauty of the area and the friendliness of the people. One of the things I like about Branson is I get the impression from everybody from the policemen, to the people in the restaurant, to the people at the shows, to the people I meet on the street who just live here. They’re glad you’re here. And I got to be honest, sometimes you go to areas, and maybe the tourism department is glad you’re there, but the citizens aren’t always glad you’re there. What I find in Branson is it’s always, everybody’s welcome, our home is your home.
TCR 00:46:00.27
Well, coming to Branson through the years, we have been able to use different facilities in town. We’ve been able to use some of the shows that have been able to allow us to use the theaters for our shows and production, and conferences that we do. In addition to that, we have used some of the hotels, when we’ve had smaller meetings, that have meetings rooms and availability. And now with the new Hilton Convention Center, where we are moving our Women of Joy beginning in 2010, we’re excited because it opens up a whole new avenue both in attendance and break out rooms. All the facilities that you would ever need, you’re going to find in this city. From the smallest meeting to the meeting that can handle four to five thousand people now. It’s all right in Branson, Missouri.
TCR 00:47:32.03
If I was looking for a place to hold a conference, before I would say no to Branson, I would come visit Branson. Because there’s some things that can’t be put in a brochure, it can not be put on a video tape, you just have to experience it for yourself. So if you even think Branson is a possibility, I urge you to come to Branson, walk the streets, eat in the restaurants, see the shows, go shopping, stay in the hotels, and meet the people. And I think you will agree with me that if you come to Branson and experience all of that, I think you’ll agree with me “Wow, you can’t put it all on paper!”
TCR 00:49:02.07
One of the things that makes Branson attractive is that people can come here and they don’t have to be wealthy people. You can get quality at an affordable rate. You can stay in a very nice hotel and you don’t have to pay big city prices. And you can stay in a place that’s just as nice and just as clean and just as comfortable. In fact, a lot of people come to Branson who I know who are quiet wealthy because they say, “Wow, I can get the same thing there that I can get in the big city!” And we find with our attendees, particularly with our Celebrators, which is designed for senior adults, many are on fixed income, they can come here and have three nights, four days with shows, meals and everything at a rate even they can afford on a fixed budget. Now when senior adults know it’s a good place to be, that’s value.
TCR 00:50:02.07
I just want to say before you say no to Branson as your next destination you need to take another look. Because you can’t put this place on paper or on video and get the full effect. So before you say no, come to Branson. Find it, see it, experience it for yourself, and I think you’ll agree with me, you’ll be here twice a year too. |

Dixie Stampede has mastered the art of entertaining! It delivered a fantastic show, with great food and excellent service. What made it most enjoyable is the fact that the cast and crew took great pride in creating a special experience for the audience and they seemed to have a good time in the process.

Dear Mr. Dent,
Good value and an excellent attitude is all that a reunion planner can ask for. The Clarion Hotel excelled in both these areas at our recent reunion in May. To say the least we were WOWED!
My journey with the Clarion Hotel began by contacting Kathy Richardson when another hotel in the area blindsided me with a contract that could not possibly be signed. Kathy came to my rescue and had our reunion booked, with contract signed, in a matter of days. She kept in touch with me over the next year by providing updates on the reservations and answered any other questions I had. She is, without a doubt, a great asset to the hotel.
When the banquet activities began, it was the same positive attitude I received. Everything was upbeat throughout the entire process. We were provided with a wonderful banquet meal. It is typical to receive at least a couple of complaints on the food, but all I heard was positive comments. Even the person who ordered the vegetarian plate commented that it was the best “veggie” plate that he ever had at a banquet.
I cannot leave out others who went out of their way to support our reunion. First there was the breakfast lady who was a delight in the morning. She is a sweet person who helped us out in the room wherever she could. I pestered her a couple of times for plastic trash bags and she stopped what she was doing to get me the bags. Simply outstanding.
Then there was a young man at the front desk that went above and beyond the call of duty to help out one of our members who had requested a handicapped room and one was not available when checking in. Apparently, all the handicapped rooms were occupied. He apparently contacted someone in on of the handicapped rooms and switched out the rooms with our guest. Again, outstanding customer service.
There is no way I could possibly leave out the two badgered Marines who tended the bar. I know we must have given them a lot of grief simply because of the choice they made when they joined the military. They were so good natured and they just took the abuse and did their job wonderfully I might add. I would be remiss if I did not mention all the others at the front desk, the housekeeping staff (my room was made up perfectly every day), and the workers during the banquet.
I was simply blown away by the positive attitude shown to our Association during the reunion. I made the comment to several of the hotel staff and our guests that I never heard an answer of NO one time that I can recollect. I am not sure if you understand just how easy it makes the reunion planners job when a facility is this helpful.
So, to sum it up; please extend our thanks to everyone at the hotel for providing us a super reunion at the Clarion Hotel. If you would like to provide my name as a reference to any military reunion planner, please do so. You will certainly get thumbs up from me.
Sincerely,
George

Armstrong Bank has used Thousand Hills Golf Resort as their headquarters for strategic planning for their Officers and Directors for the past several summers. We have found the staff to be perfect hosts and the facilities to be excellent for our needs, both educational and recreational. In fact, our board votes over and over to return each year to Thousand Hills.

The Kansas Cobras Baseball team had a great time in Branson. We won the 14-U tournament and decided to stay an extra night and celebrate with the boys.
The accommodations could not have been better. Every parent who stayed had nothing but very nice things to say about their stay at Thousand Hills. Thank you to you and your staff for a wonderful time.
I would like to come back some time and try the golf. The course looks great. We just did not have time with all of the games that we had to play.
Thanks again and hopefully I will bring my family down sometime soon. |

Hi Wanda! Just wanted to let you know how much we appreciated everything during our travel agent convention. The staff was very friendly & helpful - They did everything they said they would do, plus some more. The facility & the rooms were first class. Everyone had a great time at your beautiful resort complex. The meeting was a success and folks were very pleased with the accommodations and meeting space. I can say that the phrase "Southern Hospitality" must have originated at Thousand Hills! Wanda and Dottie, the housekeepers, your front desk team and all the Thousand Hills Staff I dealt with while in Branson were exemplary at providing great service. Your rates combined with your level of service make for an excellent business meeting venue.
Thanks for running a class outfit,

Just a note to tell you how much our golf group enjoyed our stay in Branson. The condo accommodations were fabulous. Considering that Branson is not known as a golf resort, we found you golf course to be of good quality and very challenging. Another of your strong points is the unlimited shows and restaurants available when we were not golfing. Something for all tastes. We found them close and accessible. As you now, our club started in 1986 and we have done extensive traveling to many resorts across the country. For value received, Branson was very economical. We will consider another visit in the future.

I thought I would write to thank you and your staff for the excellent job they did in helping to organize our recent meeting. I have a large part in putting meetings together in many locations throughout the world and some are easier than others. I must say the people at Thousand Hills were courteous and professional at all times. The willingness to go the "extra mile" was evident from the beginning. My co-workers who attended this function all came back with positive reports and I'm sure we will be coming back to Thousand Hills another time.

Dear Mr. Dent,
Following completion of our reunion April 27 – May 1, I would like to extend my sincere thanks for a job well done to the fine folks who made it possible: Joe Cuna, Food and Beverage Manager and his staff; Kathy Richardson, Sales Manager; and the other fine hotel employees. All combined to provide us well to enhance our overall reunion success. Joe, in particular, did an outstanding multi-facet job and excelled in all.
Should Branson once again be selected for a future reunion, we would certainly have the Clarion as our #1 prospect. Hats off to upper management for such fine-caliber staffing!!!

Clarion at The Palace;
To whom it may concern;
I am writing you regarding our reunion held at your establishment the first part of this month.
We were there from October 4th to the 8th, and as a group, we want to thank you for a wonderful “get together”.
The food, service, rooms and assistance your kitchen gave us was perfect and done with a smile.
The only complaint I heard was it didn’t last long enough.
We certainly recommend your place to anybody wishing to travel to Branson.
Thanks again,

To: Linda, Kathy and other staff members:
We would like to thank you all for a wonderful reunion at the Clarion Hotel in Branson, MO. I did not get any complaints at all for the rooms, the banquet meal or the hospitality room. With over 120 attending I think that was wonderful and I wanted you to know how pleased we were with your facility and your services. I hope you did not receive any complaints either and would welcome us back again if the association should choose to return to Branson in a few years.
Thank you again for your co-operation and assistance in making this reunion a truly wonderful experience.
Yours truly,
